My Geek Box August 2015 Review

My Geek Box: August 2015 Review, 'Toons'

Link: www.mygeekbox.co.uk

I need to apologise for this review being slightly late - this box arrived last Friday but I've been insanely busy this week.

This is the last box of my 3 month subscription and the theme was 'Toons', which I was looking forward to far more than the previous 2 boxes.

The box was pretty full and very colourful - these guys always seem to do a good job of providing plenty of items, which makes it fun to unpack.

'Everything looks better in 2D' T-Shirt

I love this t-shirt so much! It's really simple but, for someone who loves animation as much as I do, it is really perfect. The sizing of the t-shirts these guys send out always seems to be exactly right and the quality is great.

Adventure Time Inflatable Sword

This makes me feel like a big kid but I secretly love it. Adventure Time is an amazing show for grown ups and children alike, so this is a really fun item.

A pic of the sword inflated:

I don't know how I'll ever explain to anyone why I own this item but I do really like it.

The Simpsons Donut Cushion

This is a really cute cushion and a really original way of incorporating one of the most classic animated shows ever into the box. I love things like this - subtle and functional, but nods towards something that I really enjoy.

Family Guy Socks

I love Family Guy, but this item really annoys me. Did they have to send out such an obviously gendered item? What was the point in sending enormous men's socks to a girl who ordered a women's small t-shirt? These will never fit me and I don't have any guys in my life who like this sort of thing. If they had to send out something with 'MENS SOCKS' emblazoned on it, then they should have checked on the gender of their customers beforehand. When it comes to wearables it should always be unisex or the company needs to ask in advance. I'm not comfortable with these because it reinforces the stereotype that women couldn't possibly want geeky items and therefore shouldn't be catered for. Not happy.

Adventure Time Festival Wristbands

These are so cute as a filler item. As I said before, I love Adventure Time so I'm pretty happy that there are two items in the box that relate to the show.

Minions Keyring

I know a lot of people hate the minions right now (because they are literally everywhere), but I am not one of those people and I think this is really cute. I like the design of this keyring and it seems surprisingly sturdy.

Gobstoppers

I actually never ate these as a child so I'm not 100% on what they are like, but I do always appreciate getting some sweets in a box.

WarHeads

I'd never had one of these either, but I love sour sweets so I ate it straight away. I was a bit too cocky and didn't think it could possibly be that sour - but they really are!

Overall:

This was my favourite My Geek Box out of the three that I had. I loved everything except the socks and thought it was really fun. Generally, with these boxes I get the feeling that they are aimed at a slightly younger audience than I am perhaps in the market for. I think this would be a great box to get if you have kids that you're trying to introduce to different geeky things.

Personally, I haven't been blown away by this subscription. The boxes have all been good, but none of them have been fantastic or overly memorable. Although I like a few fun items, I think I prefer boxes that cater to a more mature audience and skew more towards collectibles and comics than sweets and novelties.

My subscription has ended now, so this is my last My Geek Box review - for now at least. I'll keep an eye out for exciting exclusives or themes to review in the future, but I won't be resubscribing to this one.

My Geek Box July 2015 Review

My Geek Box: July 2015 Review, 'Nemesis'

Link: www.mygeekbox.co.uk

Yesterday, I received my My Geek Box for July, which is themed 'Nemesis'. I haven't been to excited about this box because the theme wasn't overly appealing to me, but I think that they have done a good job with this one.

The box was in great condition this month and well packaged with a bright blue plastic bag covering the outside. The bag was great for me because I do prefer subtlety when I get these boxes and the bag did that without compromising the design of the box.

Everything was really well packed and looked like an intriguing collection of items! The box was also seriously heavy this month, due to one item in particular.

Resident Evil 'Umbrella Corp' T-Shirt

I love this t-shirt! I reckon this will please any Resident Evil fan - the blood slashes and splatters are great and the Umbrella Corp logo is really subtle. It's a great t-shirt, I think I will wear this a lot.

Transformers 'Autobot' Mug

This was the largest item in the box, but by no means the heaviest! This is a really great mug and and I'm relieved that it got to me in one piece. I love collecting quirky mugs, but they are so rarely delivered in good condition. The one downside for me is that it isn't dishwasher safe, but otherwise I am very happy with this.

I wanted to give you guys a better look at it - it is a very strange shape. The front side is completely flat while the rest of it is curved. I can see myself spilling tea everywhere due to the shape but I don't think that will stop me using it!

'Davros' Doctor Who Collectible

This was the super heavy item weighing the box down! It is crazily heavy for its size - I'm not entirely sure what it's made out of to be honest. I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, so this is a nice piece to have for my shelf. I think it would be a bit of a let down for anyone who isn't into the tv show but I think it was a nice fit for the theme.

Breaking Bad 'Los Pollos Hermanos' Notebook

I'm a big fan of Breaking Bad and notebooks so this should have been a win for me - unfortunately, season 4 was my least favourite and the 'Los Pollos Hermanos' storyline was incredibly boring. It's a really nice notebook though, very well made, and has the Breaking Bad logo on the corner of each page. I think this will be donated to my mum, who is a big fan of the show.

Terminator 'Skynet' Card Holder

I was really pleased to see this in my box, mainly because I've needed a card holder for absolutely ages. The design is great though and probably something that only a Terminator fan would instantly recognise. It's a good little filler item to include for this theme, particularly with the new film coming out soon.

The Hobbit 'Azog' Coaster

Who doesn't love the Hobbit? Again - a great filler item. Both filler items this month have been weirdly useful, which I very much appreciate. This coaster was being used almost straight away on my desk.

Overall:

I was pleasantly surprised by My Geek Box's efforts this month. I was worried that the theme would lend itself to a boring supervillain-fest, so it was nice to see that they did things a bit differently. Once again, they didn't include an info card so I was really relieved that I knew what everything was. They could definitely improve this box with an info card. In terms of the value, I think that it was pretty good this month, but that might be because all of the items will be of use to me.

I definitely liked the July box -what did you guys think?

August's theme for My Geek Box is 'Toons', so I'm assuming that we can expect to see a lot of animation related items in the next box.

My Geek Box June 2015 Review

My Geek Box: June 2015 Review, 'Abilities'

Link: www.mygeekbox.co.uk

I finally got my first My Geek Box on Saturday! It arrived a little later than I thought it would, but I think they had a lot of customers this month due to the promise of a European exclusive Funko Pop. The theme was abilities, so I was expecting a lot of superhero/Marvel/DC type items.

I'm going to start with the exclusive Pop, which everyone was very excited for:

Unmasked Cyclops Funko Pop (European Exclusive)

I have to admit, an unmasked version of an existing Pop is not an overly exciting reveal after all of the anticipation that had built around this item. Having said that, I love Pops of basically any kind and I do seem to be building (unintentionally) quite a large Marvel Pop collection! He fits in great with the theme and he's an adorable little bobblehead - so I can't complain.

'Mutant Academy' X-Men T-Shirt

This t-shirt is great for any X-Men fan - it's a really subtle design and I absolutely love that about it. It's great to see a white t-shirt in one of these boxes too. I understand why they don't send a lot of t-shirts in really bold colours, but I'm not a big fan of black t-shirts and my wardrobe is almost completely grey as it is. It fits great and looks great, so I'm very happy with it.

Star Wars Mouse Mat

I'll be honest - I don't like this item at all. 1) I don't like Star Wars and 2) I don't use a mouse with my laptop. It's completely useless to me. It will either be sold or thrown in a bin because I don't even know anyone who would appreciate something like this. A little disappointing to be honest, but hopefully other people got more out of this item than I did. I think they sent out a couple of different designs too (all Star Wars).

Spiderman Cards

I don't really know what these are - I'm assuming something that's collectible? Cards aren't really my thing, so they'll probably go the same way as the mouse mat. This would be a nice little filler item for a collector though.

Marvel Badges

I think everyone knows by now that I don't think much to badges in these boxes, but these are definitely some of the nicer badges I've received. I'm building an extensive badge collection thanks to these boxes - I need to figure out something to do with them all!

Now & Later Sweets

These appear to be American sweets, labelled as 'long lasting chews'. They're kind of a brightly coloured, strongly flavoured mixture of gum and Starburst type sweets. They're very weird. I can't tell if I like them.

Overall, the box was okay - it had good points and bad points. I liked the two big items, which is always a good thing. I could have done without any of the rest of it though. I'm wondering if the exclusive Pop is the reason why the rest of the box is a bit rubbish - as previous boxes that I've seen just seem to have way better content.

I'm signed up for 3 months, so I'll definitely be getting the next two boxes at least. So far I'm not convinced, but I'll reserve judgement for now. July's box is going to be themed 'Nemesis', so anything could be in store for the next box.

MyGeekBox

MyGeekBox: UK Monthly Subscription Box Service

Link: http://www.mygeekbox.co.uk/

MyGeekBox is probably the most popular UK geeky subscription box that I have come across – so I couldn’t resist getting myself signed up as soon as possible. Unfortunately, they had sold out of May boxes when I went to subscribe and I ended up having to go for the June box instead. This is the only company so far with whom I have decided to go for a multiple month subscription. I signed up for 3 months, at a cost of £47.97 (including p&p). A one month plan is £17.99 and there is also the option to go for a t-shirt only box for £7.99 per month. Each month has a theme, with May 2015 being ‘Respawn’, and every box contains a t-shirt. Other items aren’t guaranteed, but past boxes have shown a good range of stuff. The June box (which I will be reviewing here) is said to be themed ‘Abilities’ and will contain a limited edition mystery Funko Pop, which I am very excited about!
